You may be wondering why I start with a red base layer of paint? And I have to say that it's thanks to Mr. Miller, my sophomore year painting teacher at VCU art school. It's an ode to the renaissance painters, and I've really felt like it helps add depth to acrylic paints which are a notoriously flat medium, in my opinion. After years of trial and error - and thanks to my oil painting background - I'm finally happy with the depth and textures I can create in a painting like this. And it all starts with a rich base layer, which I call "the heartbeat" of the painting.
